opening prayer

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Father, you revealed your Son to the nations by the guiding

of a star.Lead us to your glory in heaven by the light of

faith. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

for ever and ever. Amen.

By the mercies of God,

let us confess our sins and present our bodies as a living sacrifice,

holy and acceptable to him,

which is our spiritual worship.

We keep silence

Lord Jesus, you are mighty God and Prince of peace:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you are Son of God and Son of Mary:

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you are Word made flesh

and splendour of the Father:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

May God who loved the world so much

that he sent his Son to be our Saviour

forgive you your sins

and make you holy to serve him in the world,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

isaiah 60:1-6

‘Arise, shine, for your light has come,  and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

‘Lift up your eyes and look about you: all assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar and your daughters are carried on the hip. Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. ‘In Bethlehem in Judea,’ they replied, ‘for this is what the prophet has written:

‘“But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler  who will shepherd my people Israel.”

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, ‘Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.’

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

When Jess says: Lord, in your mercy

Please respond: Hear our prayer

Rejoicing in the presence of God here among us, let us pray

with confidence as our Saviour taught us

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

covenant prayer

I am no longer my own but yours.

Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will;

put me to doing, put me to suffering;

let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you,

exalted for you, or brought low for you;

let me be full, let me be empty,

let me have all things, let me have nothing:

I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure

and disposal.

And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy

Spirit, you are mine and I am yours.

So be it.

And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in

heaven.  Amen.

Christ our Lord,

to whom kings bowed down in worship and offered gifts,

reveal to you his glory

and pour upon you the riches of his grace;

and the blessing  of God Almighty, the Father,

the Son and the Holy Spirit be upon you and

remain with you always. Amen.

Go in the peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ, Amen.
